The words we use on the water

Sailing has a language of its own. Finn R. Andersen has brought the explanations together in the handbook “Et nyt sprog” (“A new language”), based on the Megin and other spritsail dinghies.

Start with what you can see

Learn the names of the hull, thwarts, mast and sails. Words such as halyard, sheet, sail edge and sail corner will then make more sense when you sail with others.

The handbook also explains words and concepts related to sailing itself. You can read the text online and download the original with drawings.
