Get to know the Megin dinghy

An introduction to the boat and the words you will hear aboard.

The boat

The Megin is a double-ended dinghy with a long keel. The hull is fibreglass and the keel is wood. Some dinghies also have a centreboard. The boat can be sailed and rowed.

Finding your way aboard

The front is called the bow and the back is the stern. The dinghy's floor is the sole. The benches are thwarts and the upper edges of the sides are gunwales.

The sails

The dinghy has a four-sided mainsail, a spritsail, and a triangular jib. It can also carry a topsail. The mast, sails and associated parts together make up the rig.
